Fading Memories

Newspeak -- life!

The little provincial town where I live, Deventer, recently put an astonishing example of newspeak in our letter box... Until recently we could have large junk ('grof vuil') collected by the relevant municipal service. It would cost nothing, and was usable and useful, even for people who don't have a car, like us. Or you could take a car, and bring the junk to the local junkyard yourself.

However, in this little pamphlet, the municipality decries the lack of user friendliness of this horrible and outdated system. From now on, you have to bring the junk yourself by preference, or you could pay E14 to get it collected. That's some price hike! And all brought to us in the name of 'user-friendliness, usability, environmentally conciousness'.

The bloody, evil liars. It's got nothing to do with making things better, it's a low attempt at cutting down on spending -- even while we already pay hundreds of euros for junk collection in the general taxes.

Bah.
